Presently, there exists two explanations of how living things come into being; Creation Science which is Bible inspired and Evolution which was inspired by the physical evidence found throughout the world. Until recent times, Creation Science did not exist. Science was left to scientists and the biblical account of creation was held in reverence by those who so desired irrespective of what scientists claimed or believed. However, this status quo presented a dilemma to Fundamentalist Christians. If the Bible is a historical document as they believe, then Evolution must be an error laden theory that is not an accurate description of how the life is formed and worse, this wrongful secular view of the world is being taught to our children throughout the Nation as being an established fact.

If one professes to believe in the biblical story of creation as being historically accurate and more important, believe it is a God inspired account of how He created the world, then anyone who believes otherwise is at best misguided and at worst, someone in league with the devil and an enemy of God. In either case, to Fundamentalists there are no areas of grey and as far as creation of the world is concerned, things are either black or white; those who are with God and those who are not. Of course those who are not, the Evolutionists, automatically are assumed to be adversaries and the fact that many of them are sincere Christians is totally ignored. To Fundamentalists, all Evolutionists are atheists who are on the opposite side of the fence from them. Unfortunately, this unfair, lopsided, and inaccurate view of the situation is reinforced by our mainstream media and used as political fodder by those who lead us for the purpose of garnering votes and because our government no longer has an interest in educating citizens so they are able to discern fact from fiction.

The truth of the matter is that while some scientists are atheists, many of them are not and most have no problem integrating Evolution with their Christianity. In fact, to a Christian who happens to be a scientist, science, including the science of evolution, is a discipline which continually reveals the magnificence of God’s handiwork and this brings such scientists closer to God. Such a notion is repugnant to Fundamentalist Christians because accepting the truth means that the Biblical account of creation is a myth. This being the case, the entire Old Testament is thrown into question. Fundamentalist Christians, by definition, believe the Bible is historical truth and even God’s own truth, the truth being revealed by scientists, must be rejected for the sake of the god they really worship, the God not of the Bible, but their god which is the Bible. By believing that the bible and God are inseparable, Fundamentalists are able to achieve what they really desire in life; a resource that enables them to posture that they are a God chosen individual with the knowledge and moral authority to tell everyone else what to think, what to believe, and how to act.

At this point, we should step back and ask which makes the most sense; Creation Science or Evolution? Before proceeding, it should be understood that Evolution is not a science. Instead, it is a theory first purposed by Charles Darwin many years ago. The driving force behind Darwin’s theory is called natural selection which is also known as the doctrine of survival of the fittest. As mutations occur, beneficial ones increase the survival chances of those having the mutation and eventually it becomes the norm throughout the population. However, natural selection is not a science either. Instead, it is a description of the driving force behind evolution. Where then does science come into the picture? Science is the tools and methodologies used by naturalists and biologists to substantiate and validate what they find in nature. For example, carbon dating of rocks and fossils is a scientific method used to determine when in time something lived. Knowing when something lived is critical to establishing the evolutionary nature of life because through it, one can discover the orderly development of a species and even the development of new ones.

Now let’s just take a big wait a minute here! Creationists claim that science has never demonstrated that one species ever evolved into another. While this is what Creationists claim, nothing could be further from the truth and this is where Creationists demonstrate their lack of understanding of the “science” of Evolution. Species are nothing more than a logical but artificial categoration of various living things into groups. It is a convenient way for scientists to look at the animal kingdom, but so doing only has validity from an academic point of view. In the beginning all species were one, but due to differing circumstances they evolved differently. Throughout the evolutionary process, isolated animals remained the same species or more correctly, stayed in the same category of species for long periods of time because, early on, mutational differences between them were not significant. However, after eons the differences became too great to ignore and then man, not nature, declared these animals to be separate and distinct species. The best example of this phenomenon is the evolution of dinosaurs into birds. Clearly, birds are not dinosaurs, but also just as clear is the fact that they once were and we have found a plethora of transitional animals that establishes this to be the case.

Here again, we are getting ahead of ourselves and to settle the issue of Creation versus Evolution, we must step back and ask what evidence is available to make a definitive determination in the matter? This answer to this question is the fossil record. Let’s assume for a moment that Creation Science is true. For this to be the case, what would we expect to find in the fossil record? The answer to this question should be clear. On the surface of our planet we will find everything that is alive today and as we dig down into the past, more and more extinct species are found adding to the total number living at that point in our planet’s history. Eventually we reach a point where all living things disappear and just above that level is where we will find every animal that ever lived all mixed together in one huge biological soup. In other words we reach the “big bang” point of creation; the point where everything living today was created along with everything else that ever lived. Below this point there is nothing and at this point all creatures that ever lived suddenly appear. To be sure, if a unique creation occurred such as claimed by creation scientists, then the fossil record would be as just described.

To put it mildly, the picture described above is absurd for a number of reasons, the first of which is that this is definitely not what the fossil record shows. We live on the surface of planet earth, but the surface of our planet is continually growing and it grows by the accumulation of material on the top of the existing surface. This means that as we dig down into the surface of our planet, we are digging back into time and when we do this, we do not find that the number species continually increases and eventually proceeds to a point where all species that ever lived are there. Instead, throughout the entire fossil record, we find that species continually come and as we dig down to life’s early beginnings we find that all species converge into one and then disappear. This is the true picture of the fossil record of our planet and even an individual with little training can easily verify that this to be the case. To deny this truth is to deny reality and this is exactly what proponents of the Creation Science do. They deny the physical evidence that is readily available for all to see and latch onto a description of the fossil record that does not exist in nature. Their sole reason for taking this giant leap into fantasy is because this is what they choose to believe.

The second reason that all the species that of the world could not exist at the same point in time is that there is not enough physical room or natural resources on our planet for this to be even a remote possibility. Every living thing requires a certain amount of physical space to survive and each individual group of animals requires more and more space in proportion to their numbers. If you examine all species of animals that ever lived, calculate their population levels on the planet when they were here and make a determination of how much physical space and other resources that each population of animals requires, then it becomes obvious that one puny planet earth will not cut it for all these animals. To put this another way, if all the animals that ever lived where on the planet at the same time in its history, then in short order, they would denude the world of plants and the entire surface of the planet would be covered with manure. Furthermore, the air would be so polluted by the stench of feces and dead animals that those surviving would willingly join their more fortunate brethren who are already dead. It is just not possible for everything that ever lived to be alive at the same time and this absurdity is at the very core of creationist belief.

Finally, all the world’s animals cannot possibly exist on the surface of our planet at the same time because certain populations of animals are not capable of living along side certain other populations of animals. Case in point, large mammals and dinosaurs! Meat eating dinosaurs were ferocious predators. The mammals which existed during their reign were small and inconsequential because any large mammal would not survive in a world populated by the likes of T-Rex. Can you imagine how long a herd of present day elephants would survive when predators several times their size roamed the land which could run much faster than they could? Elephants cannot hide under rocks or in caves like smaller mammals. Obviously, if elephants lived during the age of the dinosaurs, they would not last long at all. Therefore, it is ridiculous to believe that all the animals that ever existed, occupied and thrived upon our planet all at the same time. We consider the lion to be the king of beasts. In a world full of dinosaurs, lions would be the king of feasts for these huge and ferocious predators. To hold otherwise is absurd, but this is what Creation Scientists would have us believe.

We live in an exciting and dynamic world that is ever changing through time in wondrous and miraculous ways. In contrast, the world that Creation Scientists propose is anything but. Instead, it is a dying world that started out in a glorious way, but through time, nothing new is created and what is there dies off and becomes extinct. The world envisioned by Creationists is in a continual state of decay. Think of how absurd this view of the world really is. All of life miraculously appeared in a flash and this grand event is never to be repeated again not even for the lowest of creatures. Is this an intelligent way for a deity to run a universe or is it the mark of one who is short sighted and has no love for his creation? To be sure, it is comforting to think that we were created by something superior to our selves and this may indeed be the case, but the idea that creation was a one time event is absurd in consideration of the fossil record and nothing that a Creation Scientist postures can change this. They try to sound intelligent with all their jargon and scientific talk, but the truth of the matter is what they are saying is ridiculous and the work of fools.

A very real problem we have with the fossil record is that it is so incomplete and this gives Creationist their greatest weapon against it, but only for people like themselves who are predisposed to being gullible. Over the history of the world, millions of different species of animals have lived and died, but most of these will never be found. This is a given, but this given does not alter the fact that throughout the fossil record, animals appear, persist for a while, and then disappear. Furthermore, while all the missing links will never be found, transitional species abound and to deny their existence is absurd. Despite this, Creationists deny that any links exist never stopping to think that even if no links are ever found the fossil record is such that it never will support their views. Perhaps there is another undiscovered explanation for what we find in the fossil record? This certainly is a possibility but irrespective of what the right answer is, it is definitely not creationism because the fossil record eliminates it from even being a remote possibility. On the other side of the coin, Evolution is the only explanation we presently have for what we find in nature that makes sense. Yes, there are flaws and shortcomings in our knowledge of what really transpired, but this does not give anyone license to dump a theory that is essentially correct for one that is totally absurd. Only a person who wants to believe in the absurdity would do this.

There are many things about evolution that we may never explain. How did eyes and vision develop? How did the first single cell come into being? Indeed, how did life itself begin? But because we may never be able to answer these questions, does not mean we should throw out the baby (the fossil record) with the bath water and take an illogical quantum to the totally untenable theory that a creator created the world by waving his magic wand and poof: everything that ever lived popped into being. All the missing links will not be found and all the questions we have will not be answered, but the fossil record is there, is undeniable, and as time go on, more and more evidence is continually being discovered that confirms the fact that life evolves. And if life evolves, eventually, when an accumulation of changes become significant, “bingo” a new species comes into being. All the newly discovered evidence supporting Evolution will never be enough for a creationist because they truly are not interested in evidence and care nothing for proof. Their minds are made up and logic and evidence mean nothing to them because of the axe they have to grind. The axe being that the creation myth of the Bible is history.

Creationists and there supporters, presently, are demanding equal time in the science classes of our schools and incredibly, this is what some politicians, including our President George Bush, want to give them. Many people believe in Creationism and are honest and sincere in their beliefs. However, those who are making money from the “creation revolution” through books and lectures are, for the most part, nothing more than con artists preying upon an uninformed and gullible public. People want to believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God and this includes the Old Testament. It is this heartfelt desire that makes these people easy fodder for the “creation con job” because they want to believe so strongly in what they are told. Unfortunately for the rest of us, these confused and misguided people are a voting block that Republicans are all too willing to exploit. The tragedy for the rest of us is that the union of misguided citizens with con artists and self-serving politicians is gaining ground such that superstition may one day be taught on par with science in the classrooms of this Nation. When this happens, we truly will be raising a generation of children who do not know how to think and will believe anything they are told no matter how absurd it is. In other words, our schools will be producing perfect citizens for the grand designs of the New World Order.

Authors Statement - The United States of America became the greatest nation in history because of its Christian beginnings combined with a reverence for logic reason, science and the arts. Nowhere is this more exemplified than in the likes of Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, the Wright Brothers, etc., etc. This being the case, it is truly mind boggling that we have fallen so far so fast. What is most disturbing about all of this is that these charlatans and those who fall under their spell could care less about the implications of their doings. In their minds, God and the Bible has been proven and that is all that matters.
